Learning through Play
Tina Bruce's 12 Features of Play and longside Grey and Brewer's philosophy of play.
Learning through play is a trauma enforced response.
"The child who is not embraced by the village will burn it down to feel it's worth"African proverb.
NOTICE ~ RECOGNISE ~ RESPOND
Intentional teaching!
Aim of the game - shift from working memory into long term memory. We might have expected a typical 5 year old to be able to hold 3 pieces of information or instructions. That is not realistic for children we work with!
Pie Corbett - using visuals to retell a story - no words on the paper, tamariki know the story by 'reading' the pictures.
The urge to play - urges are visceral, not logical, you just do it. You can tell when a child has an interest, they are fixated on the object. Every urge is a different lens through which to engage in an interest.
Ideas/Wonderings
- Centre the play around a book, eg. The Tiger Who came to Tea
- Set up provocations with a variety of materials
- Exploring urges and provocations
- mindmap to brainstorm
- Lots of room!
- The material needs to demand problem solving and creativity
- The teacher should be really busy! NOTICE ~ RECOGNISE ~ RESPOND - plan the next lot of opportunities accordingly.
- Play is a practise run at real life without the consequences.
